New Testament Unit 1 Choice 3

What must be done with sin before baptism can occur?
In Romans 6:2. Paul asks, “How shall we that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? I feel that this answers the question of what must be done with sin before baptism. It must die out. We must stop our wrong doings and repent before we commit to Christ.

What events from Christ’s life are symbolized in baptism?
I believe this has to do with baptism. In Romans 6:4 It states “Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death.”  It saying that when we are baptized it’s like we have died and then have risen from the dead. Like Christ did for us. He conquered death and that is what baptism symbolizes.

Considering this symbolism, why couldn’t someone be baptized by sprinkling?
In Romans 6:4 it states that we need to be “buried with him by baptism into death.” Lorenzo Snow explained “ An object cannot he said be buried when any portion of it remains uncovered; so also a man is not buried in water by baptism unless his whole person is put into the watery element.” The purpose is to be “buried” in Christ and that cannot happen unless everything is covered. That is why we cannot be sprinkled.

What do these verses teach us about how we can maintain the “newness “ of life?
The “newness” of life is speaking of the resurrection. It gives us the opportunity to be “freed from sin” (Romans 6:7) it gives us to ability to walk with Christ and start over.

According to Mosiah 3:19, what part of us would ideally die at baptism?
The part that should die at baptism is anything that relates to sin. We learn in Mosiah, that we need to become like a child. “Submissive, meek, humble, patient, and full of love, willing to submit to all things of the Lord.”

How do we know whose servants we are?
The scriptures teach that no man can serve two masters. I believe that if we are honest with our selves we can see who we are severing because we will be bearing certain “fruits” (Romans 6:21). It we are righteous and serving Christ we will be like a little child. Meek, humble, patient, and full of love etc. These fruits are found in Mosiah 3:19. If we are serving Manna or Satin then we are going to be prideful, self centered, and have an all about me attitude.

Statement:

Christ is the only source that will set us free.

Unit 2 Choice 1

1) Why we must continue doing the work for our salvation?
According to Ezekiel 3:20 there are many “stumblingblocks” in life. The reason why we must continue to work on our salvation is because we are not perfect, we will stumble and fall. If we don’t try picking our selves up or in other words repenting then we will die in our sins and no unclean thing can enter into the kingdom of God.

2) Paul’s teaching of salvation.
Romans 12:1-reasonable service.
Romans 12:2- transformed by the renewing of your mind.
Romans 12:9- Love be without dissimulation, cleave to good, Abhor Evil.
Romans 12:13- hospitality and caring for others necessity.
Romans 12:16- be considerate
Romans 12:21- over come evil with goodness.
Romans 13:1- be subject to the higher powers of God.
Romans 13:3- do good.
Romans 13:8- love one another and don’t’ have debut.
Romans 13:9- Love thy neighbor as thy self, do not commit adultery, don’t kill, don’t steal, and don’t bear false witness.

3) What cautions did Paul give about judging?
He reminded us in Romans 14: 10 that “ we shall stand before the judgment seat of Christ.” And it is not our place to put “stumblingblocks” (Romans 14:13) in our brothers way because it’s ultimately between them and Christ.

People may have different opinions and practices, but what is most important to remember?
The only person that had to right to judge and condom was Christ. But we are reminded in Romans 15; 3 that “Christ pleased not himself.” It doesn’t matter what someone else is doing or hasn’t been doing it is our responsibility to “bear the infirmities’ of the weak.” Romans 15:1.

What additional insights come from reading D&C 38:25-27?
Here we will find the parable about a father with 12 sons. He says to one sit hear, in fine robes. To the other’s he says sit their in the dirt while wearing rags. We have to be just and fair to others in this life.

4) What is the term Paul used to refer to church members in his day?
The term Paul used to describe church members was Saints.

Unit 2 Choice 2

Forgiveness

I choose this topic because I think I can always improve my understanding of forgiveness and it’s something that I know I personally struggle with. I hope that maybe others will learn from it to.

What where the people of Corinth commanded to do “if any have caused grief”?
I feel that they where commanded to forgive others but more specifically they where told to do that by comforting their offenders, and confirming their love towards them.

What blessing do we see if we forgive?
One of the blessings we receive from forgiving others is that out Father in Heaven also forgives us. (Mathew 6:14)

What is the danger in failing to forgive?
The danger of not forgiving others is that in turn the Lord wont forgive you and in his eyes you’re the one committing the greater evil.

Unit 1 Choice 1

This week in my New Testament class we study about the Lord's servants and handling church affairs. I grow curies of what was required of the Lords servants and since I strive to be one of the Lords servants I thought it was something that I should know.

What is required of the Lords servants? 1 Corinthians 4:2
We are required to be faithful to the Lord and his work.

Groups that are selected to be examples? (1 Corinthians 4:9-17)
Apostles and Timotheus have been selected to be out examples.

How dose being a good example apply to more then just the Apostles and Timotheus?
1 Corinthians 4:15 is where I believe you find this answer.” For thought ye have ten thousand instructors in Christ…” Even if we are not Apostles we are still instructors of Christ. We must lead by example because that is what he would do. Plus he is a perfect example of who/what we want to become.

Why is it important to not just know what is right? (Alma 39:11-12)
Corianton is a son of Alma and he was taught what was right but his actions said other wise. It is what lead the Zoramites away from Alma teaching. “ For when they saw your conduct they would not believe in my words”.  It also goes along with the age old saying “ actions speak louder than words.”  Or in a more spiritual aspect we learn in James 2:17 “Faith without works is dead.”

What powers come to thoughts that do more then just believe according to 3 Nephi 8:1?

From this scripture I know that the power of performing miracles come from doing more than just believing.  It also means that you are clean, and a just person. For me this means your honest, and trustworthy.

NT Unit 2 Choice 6

One of the things that make the Church true for me is the fact that we have a living Prophet. I believe in modern day Prophets and this New Testament Class has given me the opportunity to study the Prophet Paul. Below are lists of what I think he was trying to tell the people to improve on and 3 goals that I have made to improve my own life.

1 Thessalonians 3:12-13
To increase and abound in love towards another.
Make our hearts unblameable in the holiness of God.

2 Thessalonians 4:1-12
Abstain from fornication,
Be in control of our own bodies, (not to lust)
Be honest with our fellow men in all things.
Love one another,
Study
Work with our own hands.

1 Thessalonians 5:1-22
To be sober and keep watch,
To put on the armor of God. (breastplate of faith and love, and the helmet of hope for salvation.)
Don’t be angry/violent be patient.
Comfort one another and assemble together.
Comfort the feebleminded, support the weak and be patient.
Rejoice, pray, listen to the sprit,
Prove all things (work)
Abstain from the appearance of evil.

2 Thessalonians 3: 1-6, 11.
Pray
Direct your love to God
Do What God commands
Be Patient
Be organized

My 3 Goals.

1 Thessalonians 5: 11- Wherefore comfort yourselves together and edify one another, even as also ye do.  To me Paul is saying that we will find peace and comfort by being together. I recently moved into a new area away from family. I would like to be more involved in my ward Family. By doing this not only do I hope to find comfort in others by having the feeling of unity but also I hope to be able to help edify others because I know them and their needs.  I will do this by offering friendships, inviting people over, volunteer to sign up for things and by attending ward activities.

1 Thessalonians 4:3-4. (3)“ye should abstain from fornication (4) That every one of you should know how to posses his vessel in sanctification and honor. Normally when I hear the word fornication I think of adultery and the law of chastity. These are not areas in my life that I struggle in but I do struggle with jealousies. I forget to count my own blessing and look to what others have. I would like to keep my “eyes” where they belong and see what I have in my own life. That way I am more in control of my emotions and body.  So my goal is to not let Satan park in my driveway and to keep my thoughts happy and thankful versus jealous and bitter.  I will share my finding with my husband and right my blessing down for my posterity.

1 Thessalonians 5:22 Abstain from the appearance of evil. As a youth I never attended parties where I knew there would be drinking because, even if I didn’t drink, I didn’t want to give the appearance of evil. I am no longer a youth but am now a Mother. I could not get this attribute out of my head and as I was pondering it I decided that I need to work on being less sarcastic towards my kids. I need to be genie when I say thank you, or good job because they are trying to make effort to help me. While  their efforts are not always helpful they are learning. I want them to know of the virtue gratitude and my sarcasm is only giving them a false appearance of good because they don’t understand. That is why I would like to be more genuine.

New Testament Class 2014

Introduction:

Growing up, my Dad would often ask questions to make us think. On Sunday's for example he would ask us "if you could meet any Prophet who would it be and why? Despite growing older my Dad would often ask this same questions, only my responses would be more negative. For example I did not want to be like the Prophet Peter. He lived with Christ and walked on water but then lost the his faith. The story of Peter walking on water has taken on a whole new meaning this last year for me. I have learned that I am Peter (or hope to be) and even thought I stumble or sink Christ is there to pick me up and lead me to safety.

With my experience with Peter in mind I have chosen to take a New Testament class where I can better understand Peter and the work he did with our Savior. The following are some notes I took.

 Themes found in Acts 1-12:

Chapter 1- Jesus' ministry after His resurrection, The Twelve mission and Matthias' conformation.
Chapter 2- Peter teaches of the resurrection and converts people.
Chapter 3- Peter and John heal and teach of repentance. Peter talks of the second coming and confirms that Jesus is prophet that Moses spoke of.
Chapter 4-Peter and John are arrested, Peter Testifies of salvation. The saints gain a testimony of Christ and how he knows them personally.
Chapter 5-Peter and John are saved by an angel, Ananias and Sapphira are liars and die, and Apostles continue to teach.
Chapter 6-Apostles get 7 assistants.
Chapter 7- Stephen sees Christ and bears his testimony of the history of Israel, Moses, and the apostasy in Israel. He seals his testimony with his blood.
Chapter 8-Saul persecutes the church, missionary report in Samaria, Philip works miracles and converts people to the gospel. Peter and John give the of the Holy Ghost witch cannot be bought.
Chapter 10- Angel ministers to Cornelius, Peter is commanded to take the gospel to the Gentiles, Holy Ghost falls upon Gentiles.
Chapter 11- God grants repentances to the Gentiles, The Church is guided by revelation.
Chapter 12- Martyrdom of James is described, Angle frees Peter from prison. Herod dies by disease.

Bible Dictionary:

It’s an unofficial record of the history of the Church mainly with Peter leading the church. It’s split into 3 parts.
1-    Jerusalem
2-    Judea and Samaria (3stages)
3-    Moving the Church worldwide. (3 parts)

The Role Peter plays in Acts 1-12
Chapter 2: Peter testifies of the resurrection, teaches about salvation, speaks of the Holy Ghost and baptizes many. (Pentecost.)
Chapter 3: Peter heals the lame man, teaches repentance and confirms that Christ is the prophet Mose spoke of.
Chapter 4: Peter is arrested and brought before council, He testifies of salvation and the Sadducees strive to silence him.
Chapter 5: Peter is arrested and saved by an angel.
Chapter 8: Peter is in Samaria and gives the gift of the Holy Ghost and it’s not for sale.
Chapter 9: Peter heals Aeneas and raises Dorcas from death
Chapter 10: Peter has a vision to spread the gospel.

Chapter 12 Peter is freed from Prison by an angel.
